2021: The Year of St. Joseph

Pope Francis recently designated 2021 as the Year of Saint Joseph, and Mundelein Seminary is offering several opportunities for people to celebrate this special year and grow in personal holiness along with the seminarians as they reflect and pray on the life of Saint Joseph. Through a monthly speaker series and a 30-day consecration to Saint Joseph, participants will gain a better understanding of this essential figure in the life of Jesus.

“While Saint Joseph is mentioned fairly briefly in sacred scripture, there is much we can learn from his model of obedience to God’s will and his example as a husband and father,” said Father John Kartje, rector of Mundelein Seminary. “My hope is that these liturgies and prayerful devotions will help our seminarian community and all those who join us to enter more deeply into the rich spiritual life and witness of this great saint. As patron of the universal Church, Joseph remains a trusted guide for all diocesan priests and seminarians, as well as the people whom they serve.”

Beginning in the last week of January, the seminary will host monthly evenings of reflection that include vespers and exposition of the Blessed Sacrament as well as guest speakers offering reflections on different aspects of Saint Joseph’s life and spiritual character. Based on Pope Francis’ apostolic letter Patris Corde and the Litany of Saint Joseph, the reflections will be offered by bishops, priests, and lay people from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

The reflections will be recorded and shared with anyone who signs up online to receive them at http://usml.edu/year-of-saint-joseph.

Speakers include Bishop Joseph N. Perry (Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago), Father Brian Welter (executive director of the Institute for Priestly Formation), Jennifer Reid (pastoral associate at St. Columbanus Church in Chicago) and more.

The public is also invited to join Mundelein seminarians in completing a 30-day consecration to Saint Joseph from Feb. 15 to March 19. The consecration will follow along with reflections and resources in the book Consecration to Saint Joseph: The Wonders of Our Spiritual Father by Father Donald Calloway, MIC.

Participants will also be invited to join a private Facebook group to meet, discuss, and pray together throughout the 30-day consecration journey.
